How to improve website ranking on Google is a common question among bloggers and internet marketers.
Everyone wants their content to be on the first page of google. Ideally, the first position of Google search result. This is especially important if the main traffic strategy for your online business through SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
I know some of you worked really hard trying to rank on google. You've spent a great deal of time on keyword research and endless hours writing helpful contents. But you still not getting the results you want.
I completely understand your frustration. But don’t worry. You’ve come to the right place.
In this post, I am going to share with you 7 simple but powerful steps to help you improve your website ranking on google.
These tips can be implemented on your existing posts as well as your future posts. And the best part is, it only takes a few minutes to implement, but it can make a difference in your ranking position.
So without further ado, let’s get dive right in.
#1 Meta Title
Meta title is what the search engine sees. It's what appears in search engines as the name of a webpage. It's only visible to visitors in places such as the SERP (search engine results page), web browser, and social media.
The headline is the title of your post that visitors see on your blog/website. In other words, the title will be shown within the post or page.
Basically, your meta title and headline can be different for the same post.
Many people think having a title is enough to rank well on Google.
However, you will also need to include a meta title because it sends out a signal for search bots to understand what your content is all about. This will help your post result in a better and faster ranking.
Since meta title is the main header people see when they find your website through the search engine. You don’t want to make the meta title too vague or boring.
You want to make the it interesting and attractive so that the potential visitors will choose to click on your link instead of your competitors.
If you didn't know this, Google actually uses the click-through-rate to determine how relevant your content is for a given search keyword, so having the meta title that gets people to click will also help improve your website ranking on google.
So to optimize your meta title for search, you will need to have the right keywords that people will use to find your post.
I personally use Jaxxy for all my keyword research. It's a fantastic keyword tool. They do offer a free trial and I highly recommend you check it out below.
Tips For Writing Meta Title:
You should keep the meta title to no more than 60 characters. If you do, then the rest of your meta title will not be shown in the SERP.
Make sure you are NOT just writing the meta title for the search engine that makes little to no sense. You want it sound natural. Ideally, the wording should also include a keyword that is relevant to your content.
For example, if your keyword is “making money on Amazon,” your meta title can be something like “how to make money on Amazon in 8 simple steps,” or “10 surprising ways to make money on Amazon.”
You can see the meta titles are far more interesting than just the keyword “make money on Amazon.”
If you use all in one SEO Pack Plugin, you can easily add the meta title to the bottom of your WordPress editor.
#2 Meta Description
Meta description is the summary of what your content is about. This is also what people will see in places such as the SERP, web browser, and social media.
If you use all in one SEO pack plugin and don’t manually change your meta description, then the first sentence of your content will automatically be used as part of the meta description.
This is actually NOT good.
The reason is because sometimes the first sentence of your content will have very little to do with the actual post you are trying to rank. And sometimes it doesn't even include the keyword you are trying to rank either.
Ideally, you want to include a keyword in your meta description because this allows the search engine to better understand what your content is about.
You also want the meta description length to be between 150 to 160 characters. Anything more than that will not be shown in the SERP.
Apart from the meta title, meta description is also another place to hook a potential visitor to click on your page. So, a well written and compelling meta description is very important to get more clicks.
For example, if you search for something on google, and some meta description just really sucks, you are most likely not going to click on it. Chances are, you are most likely going to click on the one that is more relevant to what you are searching for.
#3 Keyword In Content
It’s very likely that you’ve heard of keyword stuffing if you’ve been in the online space for a while. It used to work, but in this day and age, this old technique is no longer effective.
In fact, if you implement this in your blog, you will likely get punished by Google.
You’ve probably also heard of keyword density. It's the number of times your keyword occurs in your post compared to the total word of the post.
In the late 1990's, the early days of search engines, keyword density was an important factor in page ranking. However, it’s also an outdated method and you need to avoid that.
Obviously, it’s still important to include keyword in your content. But the question is "how many times should your keyword appear in your actual content?”
In today’s SEO, the number of times your keyword appears within your content is actually NOT as important as the quality of your content. As long as your keyword appears at least once in your actual content, then that should be sufficient.
Google has long stressed the importance of high quality content and user experience. You want to make your content primarily for human consumption, not the search engine. This means it needs to be both readable and enjoyable.
You want to avoid using the old tricks to deceive Google. Google is very smart. Tricking Google is definitely not a smart way to grow your business online, especially if you're trying to achieve better rankings.
So, let's recap...
- Avoid keyword stuffing.
- Include at least one keyword, ideally, in the first or the second paragraph in your content.
- Focus on creating helpful content that your readers will enjoy.
#4 Alt Tag
An alt tag is also known as alt attribute or alternative text. It's a way for you to tell the search engine what the image is.
Alt tag is used for three main reasons:
1. For the visually impaired
The visually impaired often uses screen readers to browse the web page to tell them what is on the image. This helps to improve user experience, which is what Google likes.
2. For the search engine
Search engines and other robots cannot interpret images, so describing what the image helps Google and other search engine understand what they are.
This allows search engines to provide users with better results and better user experience. This also helps to get your images indexed properly and helps to improve the SEO of your image.
It’s NOT necessary to include your main keyword in the alt tag. Make sure you only use the appropriate text to describe an image.
You should NOT include the keyword if it’s NOT relevant to the image being displayed.
So, if the keyword does not describe the image, don’t use it. If you do, it could have a negative impact on your website’s SEO.
3. If the image fails to load
If an image cannot be displayed due to slow connection, alt tag provides an alternative information for that image.
This helps the visitors understand what the image is even though they are not able to see it. This also helps to improve user experience, which is what Google wants.
Tips For Writing Alt Tag:
- Ideally, you want to include at least one alt tag that has the keyword you are trying to rank.
- Always write for human, not for search engine. Provide a helpful description of the image.
- Don’t include keywords if they DO NOT describe the image.
# 5 Internal Links
Internal links are the links inside of a website that is linking from one page to another page on the same website.
Internal links are vital for SEO because they help the search engine to better understand your site.
It also helps to keep readers engaged with your website longer because they can just jump from one post to another to find more information about a certain topic.
So, you want to link related posts on your website whenever possible. But keep in mind, don’t just link to random posts for the sake of building internal links.
Only link to posts that are relevant!
# 6 External Link
External Links are hyperlinks that direct people to another website or domain.
You might be wondering why you want to send people away to other people’s website.
I know this seems counterintuitive because external links will trigger your readers to leave your website. And that causes you to lose traffic, right?
yes, it's true that you are going to lose readers. However, when you link to a trustworthy website, this will help you come across as an authority and help Google figure out what your content is about. And that's actually good for SEO.
Linking to other people’s website shows Google that you are trying to offer your readers as much valuable information as possible.
Keep in mind that not all external links are created equal. Some are more valuable than others.
Adding trustworthy, informative and relevant external links will help to improve the credibility of your website. On the other hand, if you add poor quality external links to your content, this will actually hurt your website.
When you add external links, remember to always open them in a new tab so your readers will be able to return to your site later.
Make sure the anchor texts are relevant keywords as well.
# 7 Video Embed
It’s not necessary to include a video on every single post. But including a relevant video on your post is definitely another great way for people to consume your content.
Some people prefer videos over reading. Generally speaking, including a video on your post helps visitors stay on your website longer. And when visitors are staying longer, this signals to google that you are providing helpful content, and this will also help improve your website ranking.
You can either create your own video or use someone else’s video. When you choose to use someone else's video, it’s very important that you actually watch the video and make sure it's relevant to your post before you decide to use that video.
It would be silly to just post a random video or a video that is not relevant to the post. Always focus on adding more value to your readers. When you do, Google will reward you for that.
Bonus SEO Strategy
Above are the 7 steps I use every time I write a post. I will also share with you 4 additional SEO strategy that are going to help you rank better and faster on google.
Once you've completed your post and implemented the above 7 steps. You will also want to implement the following strategy:
1. Post on Google Plus
Since Google plus is owned by Google, it just makes sense to post on google plus. When you do that, make sure to include your meta title, meta description and a relevant image of your post. This will result in a faster Google Indexing.
2. Fetch as Google.
The Fetch as Google is basically a tool that enables Googlebot to crawl and index your new post.

3. Resubmit sitemap.
Submitting a sitemap after you’ve published a new post will help search engines index your website faster.
If you publish new posts frequently, then it's not necessary to submit sitemap every time. But it certainly doesn't hurt if you decide to do that.
If you publish a new post once a week, then you may want to resubmit sitemap as this will help Google index your new content faster.
4. Share your post on social media
Sharing your post on social media is a great way to get traffic to your website. When others find your post helpful, they will share your post with their friends and family and that leads to more traffic.
More sharing lets Google know that people are liking your content, and this helps with the ranking as well.
5. Ask for comments
There are groups you can join on facebook where bloggers exchange comments.
When you are getting comments on your website, your website will come across more active to your visitors. This will also help you get much better ranking on google as well.

Although not all of my posts are on page one, some of them are. I know if I continue to follow these tips and continue to publish helpful contents, it won’t be too long before most of my posts get higher rankings.
Keep in mind that implementing these strategies will NOT guarantee that you are going to rank on the first page of google.
There are so many other factors that affect website rankings, such as your niche, keywords, domain age, domain authority, competition in your niche, how often you publish new content, and reader engagement on your site.
However, if you implement these tips on your existing posts and your future posts, you will likely start to see an improvement in your website rankings.
